Certified Aging-in-Place Specialists Cater To Evolving Needs

by Michele Bond Slaght

The average life expectancy in the United States has steadily increased over the last decade, bringing with it a unique need for housing that is specifically designed for the aging population. In 2012, the average life expectancy in the United States was listed at 78.6, which is a significant increase since 2001 when the average life expectancy was 76.9. With the increased longevity in the U.S. population comes the challenge of providing suitable housing to serve the lifestyle needs of that specific group. According to a recent poll, as many as 80% of Americans prefer to stay in the same home rather than move to a more user-friendly dwelling when mobility becomes an issue. The increased volume in the aging population combined with their strong desire to stay in their same dwelling has led to the development of specially trained group of professionals, known as Certified Aging-in-Place Specialists, (CAPS for short). The CAP Specialists are leading  the industry in constructing and remodeling homes that are custom-designed to suit the aging baby boomer demographic.

Certified Aging-in-Place Specialists (CAPS) are trained through the Natioal Association of Homebuilders to understand the evolving needs  and unique demands of the aging population. Through this knowledge, CAP specialists are able to provide customized design solutions to accommodate those evolving needs. Floor plans are specifically created with a high priority placed on both comfort and ease of accessibility. Every aspect of a home design is taken into careful consideration, including stairless entryways, variable height countertops, and strategic open space placement. By understanding the nature of aging and the specific needs it brings, CAP Specialists are able to design specialized floor plans for either new construction or an existing home to suit the needs of the aging population.  Comprehensive CAP knowledcge provides a unique perspective to the building industry, specifically home builders, remodelers, contractors, and architects that are serving the special needs of the baby boomer generation.

Whether you are considering building a new home that will grow with your evolving needs or would like to remodel your current home and incorporate an aging-in-place design techniques, a CAP specialist can help you. By understanding the nature of aging and the necessary changes it brings to a living environment, a Certified Aging-in-Place specialist can develop a plan that will make your home more universally livable, and will be able to incorporate those plans by either building the home or performing the remodeling work.
